Satellites are picking up an intense heat signature from an active wildfire burning near Skýros, Greece, where four heat detections have been registered over the past 48 hours. The blaze, which covers 100 hectares, or 247 acres, started on August 15, 2026.

Official emergency response
On 15 of August 2026 at 13.50 CET a wildfire started in Skyros island of Sterea Ellada Region, near to the village of Atsitsa, burning dense pine forest. In this moment the fire is ongoing and more than 80 firefighters and 11 aerial means are used for the fire suppression, assisted by municipality vehicles/machinery and volunteer organizations. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping is requested to provide initial rough estimation, fire extent and damage assessment emergency mapping.
