The Avocado Fire, currently an active Type 5 incident, is burning 30 miles west of Homestead in Monroe County, Florida. Since it began on July 7, 2026, the wildfire has consumed 1,000 acres of federal land managed by the National Park Service, with current fire behavior characterized as minimal and flanking through 2.5-foot tall grass.
With 90 percent containment achieved, a nine-person crew led by a Type 5 Incident Commander is working to suppress the blaze. The total cost of the operation has reached $20,000.
