Turkey faces severe wildfires along its Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, where hot, dry summers ignite vast pine forests and maquis shrubland. The 2021 season was the worst in the republic's history, with more than a hundred fires burning at once and around 150,000 hectares scorched along the southern coast.
In July 2025, deadly fires swept the western and northwestern provinces around İzmir and Bursa, forcing more than 50,000 people to evacuate and killing at least 17, including firefighters. Antalya, Muğla, İzmir and Çanakkale are among the hardest-hit regions year after year.

Turkey's wildfire season runs through the summer, roughly June to October and peaking in July and August, when heat waves, drought and strong dry foehn winds turn the coast into a tinderbox. The Mediterranean and Aegean provinces — Antalya, Muğla, İzmir and Çanakkale — are the most fire-prone, where dense pine forest and maquis shrubland ignite easily.
Turkey's forestry service (OGM) and the AFAD disaster agency coordinate firefighting and evacuations, issuing warnings through the 112 emergency line. Scientists have linked the region's record heat to climate change, which is making these fires more frequent and intense.
