Wildfire near Omiš, Dalmatia

A wildfire broke out on the evening of 13 August 2026 near Lokva Rogoznica, on the coast southeast of Omiš in Croatia's Split-Dalmatia County, and spread through pine forest toward the village of Mimice overnight as strong winds fanned the flames.

The Adriatic Highway (D8) was closed along the affected stretch and residents were evacuated, with the city of Omiš opening an evacuation centre in the Ribnjak district. 94 firefighters and 26 vehicles were deployed, drawn from four counties — Split-Dalmatia, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Šibenik-Knin and Zadar.

Chief fire commander Slavko Tucaković described it as a very large fire whose containment was significantly hindered by wind.

Satellite detections show the fire intensifying rather than easing: of the hotspots recorded around Omiš, most were logged on 14 August, with peak brightness above 390 K.

The Omiš riviera is one of Croatia's busiest stretches of coast in mid-August, and the D8 is the main road link along it. Travellers heading between Split and Makarska should check road status before setting out, and those with accommodation in Mimice, Lokva Rogoznica or Stanići should contact their host directly.
