The Ferris Fire, currently an active Type 1 incident, is burning on federal land seven miles east of Cahone, Colorado, in Montezuma County. Since its start on June 27, 2026, the blaze has grown to 63,271 acres and is 19 percent contained. The fire is being managed by a Complex Incident Management Team under the USFS, with 846 personnel currently assigned to the effort. The total cost to date has reached $17,444,715.
The fire is fueled by timber, including grass and understory, and is exhibiting extreme behavior, characterized by uphill runs, torching, and spotting. Investigations have determined the cause of the fire to be natural.
