Burning across private land in San Miguel County, the 4V Fire near Trementina, New Mexico, has reached 100 percent containment after a five-day run that burned an estimated 200 acres per day. The natural-start blaze, which began on August 29, ultimately charred 1,000 acres roughly 40 miles northwest of Tucumcari. Current fire behavior on the incident is reported as minimal and smoldering within two-foot brush fuels.

A Type 4 Incident management team oversaw the response, utilizing 26 personnel to bring the fire to full containment while accumulating total costs of $50,000. Despite this activity, the wider landscape reflects a quieter year for fire activity: 3,172,718 hectares have burned across the country so far in 2026, marking a total that sits 42 percent below the two-decade average during a typical fire season that spans from June to October.
