Burning across private lands in Wheeler County, the Shingle Fire has consumed 73,183 acres since its natural ignition on July 23, 2026. Situated 14 miles southeast of Mitchell, Oregon, the 44-day-old incident is currently spreading at an average rate of approximately 1,663 acres per day. Fire behavior has moderated significantly, characterized primarily by minimal activity, creeping, and occasional single tree torching in one-foot short grass fuels.

Despite its vast footprint across the region, firefighters have achieved 95 percent containment on the Shingle Fire. A modest contingent of 27 personnel is assigned to the Type 4 incident, operating under a Type 4 Incident Commander to manage mop-up and secure the remaining perimeter. Operations have accumulated a total cost of $31,467,73 so far.
