About wildfires in Sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa is the most fire-active region on Earth, with satellite data consistently showing more fire detections here than any other continent. The vast majority of these fires are human-managed savanna and grassland fires used for agriculture, pastoralism, and land management.
The fire seasons alternate between northern and southern hemispheres: northern Africa burns primarily from November to March, while southern Africa fires peak from June to October. While many fires are part of traditional land management, increasing population pressure and climate change are altering fire patterns.
This tracker monitors all fire activity across Sub-Saharan Africa in real-time.
