Chile Wildfires
About wildfires in Chile
Chile experiences devastating wildfire seasons, with the central and southern regions particularly affected. The country's Mediterranean climate, combined with drought conditions and the presence of highly flammable eucalyptus and pine plantations, creates extreme fire risk during summer months (December-March).
The 2017 fire season was Chile's worst on record, with over 500,000 hectares burned and 11 deaths. The 2023 fires in Biobío and Ñuble killed 26 people and destroyed thousands of homes. The Valparaíso region faces recurring urban-wildland interface fires threatening hillside communities.
Our tracking system provides real-time monitoring of all fire hotspots across Chile's territory, from the Atacama Desert in the north to the forests of Patagonia in the south.
